The Speech and Safety Policy

Read the two rules, and know nothing is added later.

Two things are punished on this site, and only two. Everything else is speech this house protects — including the things you hate reading.

We do not ban people for what they believe or say. The worst of the worst are welcome here — the extremist, the zealot, the crank, the person you cannot stand — because a place that only admits the agreeable heals nothing. Speech is free on Engagement Squared, and it is never punished. Two things are punished, and only two: BULLYING — the sustained, targeted harassment of a person — and INCITEMENT — calling for imminent injury to a human being. Nobody is restricted on a single complaint. It takes multiple complaints from different people, and every complaint is examined for manufacture: a pile-on organized to get someone restricted is itself bullying, and the organizers are the ones who answer for it. The one penalty, for the proven repeat bully, is not exile but consent: you keep your voice and your membership, but you may contact only those who have explicitly accepted you, and you may post to no one who has not. Your words stay yours; other people's attention stops being yours to take.

What that means in practice

Free speech, and only two exceptions

You will meet people here whose views you find repellent, and they are not going anywhere. Being wrong, being rude, being unpopular and being loudly disagreed with are all allowed. Bullying and incitement are not, and nothing else is added to that list later by quiet expansion.

One complaint restricts nobody

A single report cannot cost anyone anything. It takes several, from different people, and every complaint is examined for manufacture — because an organized pile-on to get somebody restricted is itself the bullying, and the organizers are the ones who answer for it.

The penalty is consent, not exile

A proven repeat bully keeps their voice and their membership. What they lose is reach: they may contact only people who have explicitly accepted them, and post to nobody who has not. Your words stay yours. Other people's attention stops being yours to take.

Connection-scoped, and no masks

There is no inbox for strangers to shout into and there will not be one. You talk with people you are actually connected to. And whoever opens a conversation is disclosed — initiator disclosure: you cannot knock on a door wearing a mask.

No trackers, no dark patterns, no third-party code

Nothing on this site watches you, ranks you, or is sold about you. No analytics, no pixels, no session replay, and not one line of code loaded from anybody else's server — you can check that by reading the page source. Ads, if there are ever any, are chosen by the page you are on, never by who you are. The person is never the product.

The desk that runs this policy is real, and it is running now

A complaint is filed on the person’s own page and read by that community’s moderators — not by every member, and not by whoever happens to be an administrator. It is examined against these two grounds and nothing else, including the question of whether a pile-on was organized. There is no member directory on this site by design, so you reach the door from wherever you can see the person; and your own standing is always yours to read.
